Its all about the testing

How remarkable, the cover of this weeks computing goes with an article covering ID Cards (yeah for a change I know). The article suggest that the government has gone against testing all aspects of the new ID system, the are quoted in saying its would be “impractical” for them to do so. “Some parts of the scheme will not be tested”, but will use “off the shelf technology that has been adequately tested elsewhere” - they say it would be a waste of time and public money. Why can the government understand if the project fails, it could lead to a bigger loss in public money, more time wasted and make fools of thoses in charge and have pushed the plans through. I would also think these different software packages with be interacting with each other leading to aspects being over look, again leading to failure. Will our government ever learn projects in the past have failed for this reason why should this one be any different?.

I agree with Eric Woods the government practice director analyst Ovum, in saying that the testing process should not be squeezed out under the pressure of other considerations such as changing objectives or the shortening of budgets.
