Marks & Sparks

I was wondering how have Marks & Spencer’s have done it, 2 years ago they were down and out. For the six months to 30 September, pre-tax profits were £405.1m ($770m), up from £305.7m a year ago, that is an amazing 32% (BBC). Hey I even remember when they opened that dreadful life store at Gateshead which was heavily overpriced and had no flow to the movement of the store (I never knew which way to turn).

So what has changed, why now have the tables suddenly turned? One reason is for its clothing now being endorsed by Twiggy (if you don’t know who Twiggy is, don’t bother finding out, or if you really want to know ask your dad ;) ). In my eyes Twiggy alone can’t bring about these drastic changes, the jingle in the advert has more of a selling factor than Twiggy. Maybe Twiggy is hitting a target audience I don’t know, but clothes sales are up.

The reason I believe in this drastic increase is food, there whole ideology on Food selling has changed over the past few years. You go into any store now and you can notice the changes. Store layouts have been heavily altered especially the one at Newcastle, it reminds me now of the food courts from Harvey Nichols and Harrods. On a lunch time the store is buzzing with people buying there healthy ranges hot/cold, sit in/ take out ranges. Even Mr Rose indicated the firm was looking to use the new space to “stretch” the brand into new areas, after the success of initiatives such as Hot Food to Go, and Eat Over Deli’s – BBC.

Were do I go when I get into Kings cross that lovely little cheap M&S food court. Well when I say cheap, cheap compared to everything else round there.

I have also got to mention Macbook with a core 2 duo processor is rather tempting, well when I say tempting I mean lustful. I love the way the can just update the processors and keep the price exactly the same. How upsetting if you have bought a Macbook in the last few months.
