Wow now I think this is really cool, Google has updated its mobile maps to pinpoint your locations by triangulating between cell towers.
Here’s the video ;

I see there’s a little buzz this morning between blogger’s about the new Google Mail feature IMAP. Over on Techcrunch and Lifehacker those guys are currently reporting about this new feature, but seem not to have this feature available yet on their account. Although they could have mine, I’m a web guy, I like everything available online.

For those who want a well synchronized online/offline experience, then I suppose it’s useful, but doesn’t Google want you to see their advertising ? What advertising do you see when your mail is delivered to your desktop client?

I also wonder if Google is doing this randomly or on Gmail sign-up date?

Update :

I now seem to have 4.3GB available on my Gmail is this normal ?

I always thought it was two gigs?

Update 2

From the Google Mail website;

It comes with built-in Google search technology and over 2,600 megabytes of storage (and growing every day).

Guess they just nearly doubled mine then !

This morning I awoke to find an invitation in my inbox for Google Mashup Editor.

“Google Mashup Editor is an incredibly powerful tool for rapid testing and deployment of mashup concepts. It’s simple easy and fun to produce something very quickly, but it will be much harder to produce fantastic products. Nonetheless, the cost-savings in development time are going to make this a popular testbed for all sorts of concepts. Google Mashup Editor is a name you will hear a lot in future.” (via)

In five minutes I had whipped up a RSS feed display for this site, although that’s all it does (displays post headings), it does show the possibilities and simplicity, find it here.

The above pledge does sound rather good but the part I believed everybody missed is the part about these initiatives being meaningless. The reason for this is that the cookies will be renewed anytime the user uses a Google Service : Gmail, Blogger, Youtube, Google Earth, Google Checkout, Orkut etc.

Who doesn’t use one of those services in 2 years ?

After reading a rather interesting article about the fears of online stalkers I felt it was important to raise the issue further. People tend to forget about how the tangled wires of the interweb can become an advantage to anybody, in which your every moves can be monitored. The main artillery in a cyberstalkers box of tricks is a little thing known as the Search Engine. Google and the other giants of search tend to do a little thing known as indexing and caching, now I’m not going to be condescending and inform you of how Google and the Google bots work but its vital to understand that your actions are constantly being stored. Search engines do a very good job of removing the tangles of the web, to leave stepping stones between each site on information about YOU. Information including name, email address, phone number, or where you work etc. Now having this information freely available isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the importance should be emphasized on you knowing that this information is available and you are the person who would be constantly adding to it.

A good example is Hot or Not and Google maps somebody had created a small web application that allows you to search by post code (or close to it) to find people registered on Hot or Not then displays their profile together with photo’s etc. Now this sort of thing could be created from any site you supply a post code too, which I find a little scary because then it becomes very personal which could be a big danger to society members like women. Although things like this I see as an extension to the phonebook, its getting the balance just right. Nobody has full control over the web, so be careful.

Furthermore I fear for the youth culture of today, in the future when applying for jobs a big long trail will be left of your Friday night shanigans or a comment on a site that may not be appropriate. All an employer would have to do is perform a ’search’ and the results would be displayed. I wouldn’t be surprised in the none to distant future to find organisations in which other org’s employ to ’dig up dirt’ about prospectus employees. The Internet gives you the interactive user freeness, in which views and actions can be expressed. Now I am not judging these actions but what is imperative to this argument is that these views you reflect are in line with any future job roles you take, unlike some young lib dem eh. A good article about this can be read here

Google PageRank is probably one of the most important algorithms ever developed for the Web. With billions of existing pages and millions of pages generated every day, the search issue in the Web is more complex than you probably think it is. PageRank, only one of hundreds of factors used by Google to determine best search results, helps to keep our search clean and efficient. But how is it actually done? How does Google PageRank work, which factors do have an impact on it and which don’t? And what do we really know about PageRank?
