To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of ‘Prodigal Son At Winterland, San Francisco, CA’ by Bruce Springsteen on the 15th December 1978 - This evening I decided to listen to the whole concert in full. Many argue this performance is his greatest ever, I’m still undecided, have a listen and see what you think!

Entire show (250+ mb)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R98G47S0
Part 1 (discs 1 and 2)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LZWRZEJ8
Part 2 (disc 3)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GRF5Z91Y

Set List: Badlands / Streets Of Fire / Spirit In The Night / Darkness On The Edge Of Town / Factory / Promised Land / Prove It All Night / Racing In The Streets / Thunder Road / Jungleland / The Ties That Bind / Santa Claus / Fever / Fire / Candy’s Room / Because The Night / Point Blank / Mona – She’s The One / Backstreets / Rosalita / Born To Run / Detroit Medley / 10th Avenue Freeze Out / Raise Your Hand / Quarter To Three

Notes about the show: Broadcast on KSAN in San Francisco, CA. The stretch run of the Darkness tour featured several differences from early in the tour, most notably Bruce’s regular inclusion of "The Fever" and "Point Blank," as well as opening the second set with "The Ties That Bind." This show is another nomination for greatest show of all time, and another show with which you should start your collection. The performances of "Prove It All Night," "The Promised Land," and "Backstreets" are some of the best of all time. It was first released on CD by Great Dane Records as "Live in the Promised Land," and then Crystal Cat released their version called "Winterland Night," and the remasterer extraordinaire Prodigal Son released his version called "Prodigal Son at Winterland." It should also be noted that this show was another of the early vinyl bootlegs, also called "Live in the Promised Land," but the source tape was from the broadcast and does not include the last two songs. By this time, Bruce knows that radio broadcasts really help the bootleg industry, and he dedicates "Racing in the Street" to all the guys on Kingsley and Ocean Avenues (along the Jersey Shore) who will hear this show "through the magic of bootlegging." This was Bruce’s last radio broadcast until July 3, 1988.

Thanks,

- Kyle

Mickey Rourke plays a down-on-his-luck, aging wrestler facing the end of his career who suddenly needs to reach out to his daughter, poignantly played by Evan Rachel Wood, and a stripper pal, Marisa Tomei.

How much of this do I really care about? – Not much, but I do care about the Springsteen track being played in the background of the trailer. I heard the track about 2 months ago, cracking stuff, watch the trailer and listen to the song.

I’ve been waiting a few weeks for this, the digital launch of the Magic Highlights Tours album. Well officially it launches tomorrow, but to my luck it launched on the 4th July in the UK. To my amazement (yeah I’ve just checked) this was the first album I have ever purchased on iTunes, although I’ve downloaded many individual songs over the 4 years I’ve been using the iTunes Store, I haven’t actually downloaded a full album until now. It’s good to see Mr Bruce Springsteen embracing the digital era, delivering mp3s and videos online with no physical release currently planned.

The artists, songwriters, and music publishers are waiving all of their royalties, and Columbia Records is donating all of its net profits, for all sales to benefit The Danny Federici Melanoma Fund. The iTunes Store is donating their first year’s net profits as well.

OK – The album is a complete waste of money (4 tracks + 4 videos) for £6.99, but a least you know the profits are going to a good fund. Still a little expensive though for what your actually getting, it may put many off.

- Kyle

Update : OK I lied, its worth downloading just for ‘The Ghost of Tom Joad’ /w Tom Morello

Danny Federici, for 40 years the E Street Band’s organist and keyboard player, died this afternoon, April 17, 2008 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City after a three year battle with melanoma.

The Federici family and the E Street family request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Danny Federici Melanoma Fund. A web site for the Fund is being established and we’ll post its link when it is on line.

Bruce Springsteen’s concerts scheduled for Friday in Ft. Lauderdale and Saturday in Orlando performance are being postponed. Replacement dates will be announced shortly.

Just imagine this, thanks Red Herring

Is Bruce Springsteen about to follow the example of his good pal Bono and get his own Special Edition iPod?

Even, as he once joked, he wouldn’t take the money.

Dunno. The ones who would know, of course, are Springsteen; Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Jon Landau, Springsteen’s longtime manager and record producer. And they’re not talking.

Still, we find it revealing that Springsteen, Jobs and Landau were in the same place at the same time Saturday night in downtown San Jose.

The occasion was Springsteen’s two-and-a-half hour, Ramrod-rockin’ performance at HP Pavilion. (Bruce actually didn’t play ‘Ramrod,’ but he made up for it by including ‘Boss Time’ in a rousing ‘Glory Days’). Jobs and his wife, Laurene Powell, were spotted in the crowd below the right side of the stage, near E-Street band members “Professor” Roy Bittan and “Sister” Soozie Tyrell. A well-placed source said she also saw Landau, who does not attend many of Springsteen’s concerts, rockin’out nearby.

Did the men discuss some business backstage before the show? Or were they there just to enjoy the ‘Magic’ of the night?

Your guess is as good as ours. But this much is known:

When Springsteen inducted Bono and U2 at the 2005 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction show, Bruce told the crowd about the first time he saw U2’s iPod commercial on TV.

“I thought they had totally sold out,” Springsteen joked, as the audience – and Bono — roared with appreciative laughter. So I called up Jon (Landau) the next morning and said, ‘Did you see that iPod thing?’ ”

“Jon said, ‘Yeah, but they didn’t take the money.’ I said, ‘that’s smart, that’s wily.’

“So I tell Jon – I want you to call up Bill Gates or whoever is behind this (iPod) thing and float this (idea of a) red, white and blue iPod signed by Bruce ‘The Boss’ Springsteen,” he joked again.

“And remember, no matter how much money he offers, don’t take it!”

OK, so the Boss wasn’t quite sure who’s behind the iPod. But the world sure has changed since Springsteen cut his first record deal with Columbia Records in 1972. And so has the music industry.

Apple introduced the U2 Special Edition iPod in October 2004.

“U2 is one of the greatest bands in the world and we are floored to be working with them,’’ Jobs said in an Apple release at the time.

Red Herring thinks U2 is a fine band. But it’s not Bruce Springsteen and the LEGENDARY E-Street Band.

After Springsteen’s stop in Silicon Valley, we suspect Steve Jobs feels exactly the same way.

All with a pinch of salt, but I’d have one!

Here is a song called Fire which Springsteen originally wrote for his idol Elvis Presley – he sent him a demo of the track in 1977, but Elvis died before he could record it. It was eventually a Number 2 US hit for the Pointer Sisters, in 1978.
Excellent Stuff!
